ATAR Sciences Tutoring in Perth

Chemistry, Physics and Human Biology, taught in small classes (max 10) by experienced ATAR grads who sat the WACE papers. Biology and Psychology info included for students weighing up the full WA science line-up.

Five ATAR sciences in WA

Chemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Biology & Psychology.

WA offers five ATAR sciences, each demanding a different style of brain. Chemistry is conceptual and bonds maths to molecules. Physics is mathematical and rewards problem-solving. Human Biology is structured recall layered onto body systems. Biology zooms out to ecosystems, plants and evolution. Psychology pivots to behaviour, memory and research methods. Below, the side-by-side, then a deeper page for each.

Questions Perth parents ask

Common questions about ATAR Sciences in Perth.

How many sciences should I take?
Most ATAR-bound students in Perth take one or two sciences. One is normal and totally fine. Two is common for medicine, veterinary or biomedical pathways (usually Chemistry plus Human Biology, or Chemistry plus Physics). Three is rare and usually only justified if you genuinely love them all and your other four ATAR subjects are still strong. Quality over quantity always wins.
What's the difference between Biology and Human Biology?
Biology is broader: ecosystems, plants, animals, microorganisms, evolution, environmental change. Human Biology is narrower and deeper on one species (us): body systems, genetics, infectious disease, lifespan biology. If ecology, marine biology or agriculture interests you, Biology fits better. If you're medicine, nursing or biomedical-bound, Human Biology is the more useful pick. More on Biology →
Does Psychology count as a science for uni entry?
Yes. SCSA Psychology is a List A (science) ATAR subject and is accepted at UWA, Curtin and Murdoch for psychology, criminology, social work, education and most arts degrees. It does not, however, replace Chemistry for medicine or Physics for engineering. Those still want the lab sciences specifically. More on Psychology →
Is Human Biology easier than Chemistry?
Different, not strictly easier. Human Biology is content-heavy and rewards organised note-taking and recall. Chemistry is concept-heavy and rewards understanding the underlying model. Strong English students often find Human Biology more comfortable. Strong maths students often prefer Chemistry. Both scale similarly when you score in the top third.
What if I want to do medicine?
Chemistry is the only ATAR subject Curtin lists as essential for direct-entry MBBS. UWA and Notre Dame's school-leaver Assured Pathways recommend rather than require it, but every WA medicine pathway treats Chemistry as assumed-knowledge for first-year content. Most med-bound students pair it with Human Biology for the content overlap, or Physics if they're stronger at maths. The bigger levers are your overall ATAR plus UCAT (and Casper Test for Curtin), so don't sacrifice marks chasing a third science.
What if I want engineering?
Engineering at UWA and Curtin requires Maths Methods and assumes Physics or Chemistry (often both). Civil, mechanical and aerospace lean heavily on Physics. Chemical, materials and biomedical engineering use Chemistry more. If you can carry both Physics and Chemistry without dropping below the high 70s in either, do it. If not, pick the one aligned with your engineering branch.
Do I need Physics for engineering?
Strongly recommended, not always strictly required. UWA and Curtin engineering programs assume knowledge of Physics for first-year units like statics, dynamics and electromagnetism. Students without Year 12 Physics can still get in via bridging units, but they typically work harder in first year. If engineering is the goal, take Physics in Year 11 at minimum and decide on Year 12 based on how it goes.
