What you'll actually learn.

Applications is the 'practical' ATAR maths. No calculus, but plenty of statistics, financial modelling and network analysis that real jobs actually use. Scaled well in WA, and the workload is manageable if your fundamentals are clean.

Beyond the weekly class, every Educatta Applications student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director who builds a personalised study plan around your school's pace, your goals, and your upcoming tests, then stays on call via group chat to adjust the plan and prep you for each assessment. Included in every package, no extra fee.

Unit 1
Consumer maths, algebra & measurement
The fundamentals: building the algebra and measurement muscles.
Consumer arithmetic
Percentage, ratio, GST, discount and markup. Wage, salary and simple interest calculations.
Algebra & matrices
Linear equations, formulas and substitution. Introduction to matrices and operations.
Shape & measurement
Pythagoras, area, volume and surface area. Similarity and scale drawing.
Assessment: Short investigation and unit test.
Unit 2
Data analysis, trigonometry & linear graphs
First real taste of statistical thinking.
Univariate data analysis
Measures of central tendency and spread. Box plots, histograms, and data interpretation.
Applications of trigonometry
Sine and cosine rules for non-right triangles. Bearings and practical problems.
Linear equations & graphs
Gradient and intercept, simultaneous equations, piecewise linear models.
Assessment: Data investigation, plus test.
Unit 3
Bivariate data, recursion & networks
ATAR-scored. This is where scaling is won or lost.
Bivariate data analysis
Scatter plots, correlation, least-squares regression, interpretation and prediction.
Growth & decay in sequences
First-order recurrence relations, geometric growth, financial applications.
Graphs & networks
Vertices, edges, walks, trails, paths; Eulerian and Hamiltonian circuits.
Assessment: 50% school-assessed (investigations and tests). Mid-year exam counts.
Unit 4
Time series, annuities & decision maths
Finance and optimisation: the most 'adult' unit in ATAR maths.
Time series analysis
Trend, seasonality, and smoothing. Deseasonalising data and forecasting.
Loans, investments & annuities
Reducing balance loans, annuities, perpetuities, plus financial calculator literacy.
Networks & decision mathematics
Shortest path, minimum spanning trees, critical path analysis, flow networks.
Assessment: External exam worth 50% of final score. 2.5 hours, calculator-assumed.

Questions we hear a lot

Maths Applications FAQs.

Is Applications 'easy' compared to Methods?
It's different, not easy. Applications rewards clear communication and accurate data handling. A lot of students who struggle in Methods thrive here because the patterns are more concrete, but the final exam still catches anyone who hasn't practised the finance and networks topics seriously.
Can I do both Apps and Methods?
Yes, and many of our students do. Doubling up helps scaling and covers you for both STEM and non-STEM uni pathways. We run the two classes back-to-back at Bentley on certain days.
Which uni courses accept Applications?
Most Arts, Business, Psychology, Education and Health Science degrees. Some Science degrees accept it instead of Methods (e.g., Pharmacy at Curtin). Always double-check the ATAR bulletin for your specific course.
Is there calculus in this course?
No. Applications is calculus-free. It uses algebra, statistics, finance maths and graph theory instead.
How's the scaling?
Historically Applications scales moderately, not as high as Methods, but strong performance still lifts your ATAR meaningfully. Aim for 85%+ raw score to benefit.
Do I get one-on-one support outside of class?
Yes. Every Educatta student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director. They run a one-on-one planning session at the start of each term to build your custom study plan, then stay on call via group chat for the rest of the term, adjusting the plan, prepping you for upcoming tests, and answering questions between classes. Included in every package, no extra fee.

Every quote is from a current or recent Educatta student. Names and schools shared with permission.

★★★★★
"Apps gets dismissed as easy. It's not. The trip-ups in stats and finance lose you marks fast. The class kept finding the spots I was sloppy on."
Liam T.Year 12 · Como Secondary

★★★★★
"Thought I was a 70 student. By August mocks I was averaging 90. Just clearer teaching, honestly. Networks chapter was where I caught up."
Maya R.Year 12 · Canning Vale College
+30 marks
★★★★★
"The networks chapter alone moved me 8 marks. The tutor walked through every algorithm with examples we redrew till it stuck. Time-series was the same."
Daniel S.Year 12 · Lynwood SHS
+27 marks
★★★★★
"I picked Apps because Methods scared me. Educatta showed me how to actually compete on Apps scaling. Final scaled mark was 87."
Charlotte H.Year 12 · Penrhos College
+22 marks
★★★★★
"Came in below 60. Left on a 91. The bivariate data unit was where I started believing I could pull this. Tutor never gave up on me."
Noah P.Year 12 · Aquinas College

★★★★★
"I struggled with reading the question stems in Apps. The class spent two weeks just on question dissection and my topic test marks moved 12 points."
Sienna G.Year 12 · All Saints' College

★★★★★
"Loans, annuities, depreciation, I had no foundation. Educatta built it from the ground up. By the section two papers I was finishing 15 minutes early."
Marcus D.Year 12 · Bentley

★★★★★
"Everyone said Apps would scale me down. Educatta showed me how to push my raw mark high enough that the scaling didn't matter. Worked."
Aisha L.Year 12 · Wesley College

"I'd lost confidence after Term 1. The tutors here took me seriously and walked me through every step. By August I was on a 78 average."
Tom B.Year 12 · Carey Baptist

★★★★★
"I did almost no Apps until Term 2. Educatta crash-coursed me through Units 3 and 4 in 6 weeks and I scored 87 in the WACE exam."
