SCSA Curriculum

What you'll actually learn.

The Methods course builds the calculus and statistical thinking that universities assume in first-year STEM. Our curriculum mirrors the SCSA syllabus structure: Year 11 (Units 1–2) is foundational, Year 12 (Units 3–4) is the ATAR-scored pair.

Beyond the weekly class, every Educatta Methods student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director who builds a personalised study plan around your school's pace, your goals, and your upcoming tests, then stays on call via group chat to adjust the plan and prep you for each assessment. Included in every package, no extra fee.

Unit 1
Counting, functions & trigonometry
The foundation layer. If these don't click, nothing above them does.
Counting & probability
Permutations, combinations, set theory, probability rules and conditional probability.
Functions & graphs
Linear, quadratic, polynomial and rational functions. Transformations and inverse functions.
Trigonometric functions
Unit circle, radian measure, exact values, sine and cosine graphs.
Assessment: Typically one investigation, one response task, and a unit test per topic cluster.
Unit 2
Exponentials, sequences & intro calculus
Where rate of change enters the chat. The bridge to Year 12.
Exponential functions
Exponential growth and decay. Modelling real-world populations, compound interest, and decay.
Arithmetic & geometric sequences
Explicit and recursive forms, sums of series, applications.
Introduction to differential calculus
Rates of change, first principles, derivative rules for polynomials.
Assessment: Investigation on modelling, plus response task and unit test.
Unit 3
Further calculus, integrals & discrete random variables
ATAR-scored. Calculus gets serious.
Further differentiation
Chain, product and quotient rules. Derivatives of trig, exponential and log functions. Optimisation.
Integration
Antiderivatives, definite integrals, area under curves and between curves, applications to motion.
Discrete random variables
Probability distributions, mean and variance, the binomial distribution and its applications.
Assessment: 50% school-assessed (investigations, tests, response). Mid-year exam counts.
Unit 4
Logarithms, continuous RVs & statistical inference
The last stretch before the external exam. Every mark matters.
The logarithmic function
Log laws, the natural logarithm, solving exponential and log equations, calculus of log functions.
Continuous random variables
Probability density functions and the normal distribution. Standardisation and calculating probabilities.
Interval estimates for proportions
Sampling distributions, confidence intervals for a population proportion.
Assessment: External exam worth 50% of final score. 3 hours, calculator-assumed and calculator-free sections.

Questions we hear a lot

Maths Methods FAQs.

Do I need Methods for engineering or science at uni?
For most engineering, physics and advanced science degrees at UWA, Curtin, Murdoch and ECU, yes, Methods is either a prerequisite or an assumed knowledge subject. If you're unsure about a specific course, we'll map it for you during the trial lesson.
What's the difference between Methods and Applications?
Methods is calculus-heavy and is the pathway subject for STEM. Applications is more focused on statistics, finance, networks and real-world modelling, which is great for business, psychology, and humanities. Many students do both. Neither is 'easier'. They reward different skills.
I'm struggling in Year 11 Methods. Can I still catch up?
Yes. That's often when students come to us. Unit 1 gaps (especially algebra and trig) cascade into Unit 3 disasters. The trial lesson is the diagnostic: we'll map the gaps and build a term plan to close them before the next topic.
Do you teach the calculator-free sections specifically?
Every class has a calculator-free segment. Our workbook includes separate CF and CA practice questions designed after recent WACE exams. Students usually tell us the CF section feels more manageable within the first term.
What does a typical 2-hour class look like?
15 min recap + quick quiz, 50 min new content with worked examples, 40 min supervised practice with live feedback, 15 min exam-style consolidation. You always leave with next steps.
Do I get one-on-one support outside of class?
Yes. Every Educatta student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director. They run a one-on-one planning session at the start of each term to build your custom study plan, then stay on call via group chat for the rest of the term, adjusting the plan, prepping you for upcoming tests, and answering questions between classes. Included in every package, no extra fee.

★★★★★
"The way derivatives finally clicked for me here was insane. My teacher had us copy out worked examples; my Educatta tutor had me do them blind. Different game."
Sophie L.Year 12 · Rossmoyne SHS

★★★★★
"I came in mid-Year 12 panicking about Methods after a tough Term 2. They mapped out exactly what to study every week and my Methods raw moved 21 marks by mocks."
James K.Year 12 · Aquinas College

★★★★★
"Past-paper drills were the difference. By Term 3 I'd seen every question type in a different form already. Calculus papers stopped being scary."
Aisha N.Year 12 · Willetton SHS
