What you'll actually learn.

Chemistry ATAR is deeply conceptual. Bonding, equilibrium and redox all stack on one mental model of how electrons behave. We teach the model first, the reactions second, which is why students tell us it finally 'clicks'.

Beyond the weekly class, every Educatta Chemistry student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director who builds a personalised study plan around your school's pace, your goals, and your upcoming tests, then stays on call via group chat to adjust the plan and prep you for each assessment. Included in every package, no extra fee.

Unit 1
Chemical fundamentals
Structure, bonding, and the arithmetic of reactions.
Atomic structure & the periodic table
Electron configuration, periodic trends in reactivity, ionisation, electronegativity.
Chemical bonding
Ionic, covalent (polar & non-polar), metallic and the structures they create.
Chemical reactions & stoichiometry
Mole concept, balanced equations, limiting reagents, percentage yield, solution calculations.
Assessment: Practical investigation, test, and short-response task.
Unit 2
Molecular interactions & reactions
From lone molecules to solutions, gases and rates.
Intermolecular forces
Dispersion, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding; effects on physical properties.
Aqueous solutions & acid-base
Concentration, dilution, strong/weak acids, neutralisation and titration.
Gases & reaction rates
Gas laws, collision theory, factors affecting rate, energy profile diagrams.
Assessment: Investigation (rates or titration), test, and cumulative Year 11 exam.
Unit 3
Equilibrium, acids & redox
ATAR-scored. The unit where most students plateau, unless the concepts are taught properly.
Chemical equilibrium
Le Chatelier's principle, equilibrium constants (Kc), predicting shifts, industrial applications (Haber, contact process).
Acid-base equilibria
pH calculations, Ka and Kb, polyprotic acids, buffers and pH indicators.
Oxidation-reduction reactions
Oxidation states, half-equations, galvanic cells, electrolysis and E° values.
Assessment: 50% school-assessed (practicals, tests, investigation). Mid-year exam.
Unit 4
Organic chemistry & synthesis
The curve flattens, if you've built the right foundation.
Hydrocarbons & functional groups
Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, haloalkanes, carboxylic acids, esters, amines and amides.
Organic reactions
Addition, substitution, esterification, oxidation, and polymerisation.
Biomolecules & synthesis pathways
Proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Multi-step organic synthesis and reaction mapping.
Assessment: External exam worth 50%. 3 hours, includes a structured data response and extended answers.

Questions we hear a lot

Chemistry FAQs.

Chemistry feels like pure memorisation. Is it actually conceptual?
It's almost entirely conceptual once you understand how electrons move. Memorisation compensates for not 'seeing' the structure. We teach that structure first, which is why students tell us the rest becomes less work, not more.
Do I need Methods to do Chemistry well?
Methods helps for Unit 3 & 4 quantitative work (equilibrium constants, pH, thermochemistry). Applications students do fine, but need to lock down the algebra we teach early in term.
How much does the prac component matter?
Around 20–25% of school-assessed marks. We run practical analyses (data interpretation, error analysis, and writing up) as a standing topic every fortnight.
Is Unit 4 organic really as hard as people say?
It's volume-heavy, not hard. The trick is to map the functional group transformations as a network, not a list. We do this in weeks 2–3 of Unit 4 term and students typically find it the most satisfying unit.
What's the best way to study for the external exam?
Past papers. We run timed, marked past papers weekly in the final 6 weeks, with proper exam-style feedback. Nothing replicates exam conditions except exam conditions.
Do I get one-on-one support outside of class?
Yes. Every Educatta student is paired with a dedicated learning advisor: a senior tutor or centre director. They run a one-on-one planning session at the start of each term to build your custom study plan, then stay on call via group chat for the rest of the term, adjusting the plan, prepping you for upcoming tests, and answering questions between classes. Included in every package, no extra fee.

Real students, real marks

What our Chemistry students say.

Every quote is from a current or recent Educatta student. Names and schools shared with permission.

★★★★★
"Chem was the subject I dreaded. The tutor broke organic into 'see the carbon, count the bonds, find the leaving group'. Sounded simple, completely changed how I read every question."
Jasmine V.Year 12 · Aquinas College
+28 marks
★★★★★
"Equilibrium and acid-base were a wall for me. Six weeks of weekly drills here and I never lost more than a mark on those topics again."
Hayden W.Year 12 · Canning Vale College
+31 marks
★★★★★
"The Year 12 calculation papers were the difference. We worked through all of them and the timing finally clicked. From 73 to a 96 raw."
Sarah Y.Year 12 · Rossmoyne SHS
+24 marks
★★★★★
"Redox half-equations destroyed me at school. The tutor's method (atoms, charges, electrons in that order) made it foolproof. Topic test was a 92."
Marcus L.Year 12 · Hale School
+22 marks
★★★★★
"I joined in Term 2 on a 65. Final exam was a 90. The IR spectroscopy and organic mechanism drills carried me."
Olivia P.Year 12 · Penrhos College
+27 marks
★★★★★
"The class is small enough that the tutor knows your weak spots within the first lesson. Mine was equilibrium. Three sessions later, 94 on the topic test."
Ben T.Year 12 · Christ Church Grammar
+26 marks
★★★★★
"I was on track to fail Chem. Educatta got me to a 90. The transformation is real. Hardest subject for me, biggest mark gain."
Aanya M.Year 12 · MLC
+33 marks
★★★★★
"Volumetric analysis used to take me 30 minutes per question. Now it takes 7. Pattern recognition is everything in Chem and Educatta drilled it."
Liam K.Year 12 · Aquinas College
+25 marks
★★★★★
"The tutors here gave me a personalised study plan after my first practice paper. Two months later my mock was 87. Plan worked."
Sophia N.Year 12 · All Saints' College
+29 marks
★★★★★
"Came in scared of organic chem. Left scoring top of class in the unit 3 test. The reaction map worksheet was a game-changer."
