Architecture in WA is offered at UWA (Bachelor of Environmental Design then Master of Architecture) and Curtin (Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) then Master of Architecture). Both pathways take 5 years total to register as an architect.
The good news: WA architecture has flexible ATAR prerequisites. The catch: portfolios may matter more than subject choice, and the strongest students take subjects that support both creative and technical first-year content.
What each WA university requires
| University | Required ATAR subjects | Typical ATAR cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| UWA Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture pathway) | Mathematics Applications or higher | ~80 to 85 |
| UWA Master of Architecture (postgrad) | Bachelor of Environmental Design | N/A |
| Curtin Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) | None specified | ~75 |
| Curtin Master of Architecture (postgrad) | Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) | N/A |
The optimal 5-subject combination
For students aiming at UWA Architecture (via Environmental Design), the strongest combination is:
- Mathematics Methods (lifts ATAR; better than Applications for parametric design and structural analysis later).
- Physics (covers structural mechanics and materials, both core to architecture).
- Visual Arts or Design (builds your portfolio; demonstrates creative engagement).
- English (mandatory for WACE).
- One stretch subject: Chemistry, Geography, or Economics.
ATAR projection: 85 to 92 for competent students with strong scaled marks in Methods and Physics.
Why Methods over Applications for architecture
Most architecture students take Applications, which is sufficient. But Methods has three benefits:
- Scales 8-11 marks higher than Apps for the same raw mark.
- First-year structural analysis uses calculus and trigonometry. Methods covers both more rigorously.
- Parametric design (advanced architecture computing using Grasshopper, Rhino) uses calculus and vectors. Methods is the foundation.
Why Physics matters more than Chemistry
Architecture engineering modules cover statics, structural loads, materials properties, and beam theory. All of these are Year 12 Physics content. Chemistry is useful for materials science but architecture courses emphasise structural mechanics over chemistry.
If your school does not offer Physics, take Chemistry as a science substitute. Both scale similarly and both lift your ATAR.
Visual Arts vs Design at Year 12
Both Visual Arts ATAR and Design ATAR scale near neutral (-1 to neutral at the median). They are not the highest-leverage ATAR subjects, but they:
- Build a body of creative work for portfolio submission (UWA does not require but values).
- Develop the design vocabulary used in first-year architecture studios.
- Demonstrate genuine creative interest, which matters for personal statements and interviews.
If you take both, double-count creative engagement in your top 4 calculation. If you take one, choose Visual Arts for fine arts pathways or Design for architecture-specific.
The portfolio question
UWA does not require a portfolio for entry to Bachelor of Environmental Design. Selection is by ATAR plus academic rank. Curtin's Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) similarly does not require a portfolio.
Where portfolios matter: at the postgraduate Master of Architecture stage. UWA and Curtin both require portfolio submissions for the Master degree, drawing on work produced during the bachelor program.
Career outlook
Architecture graduates in WA enter roles including registered architect (after additional 2-3 years post-Master practice), interior architect, urban designer, building information modelling (BIM) coordinator, and construction manager. Starting salaries in Perth typically run $55k to $70k.
WA has architecture employment in residential design (largest segment), commercial development, mining infrastructure, and government urban planning.
What to actually do this week
- Open the UWA Bachelor of Environmental Design and Curtin Architectural Science admission pages. Note the prerequisites and ATAR cutoffs.
- If you take Visual Arts or Design at Year 12, save your best work in a digital portfolio. You will need it at Master of Architecture stage.
- Visit a working architecture studio if possible (most welcome students for short tours). The first-year courses align closely with what practising architects do.
