Inside Carey

Carey Baptist College was established in 1998 by Carey Baptist Church as a Christian K-12 education option in Perth's south-east corridor. The college takes its name from William Carey, the British Baptist missionary often called the 'father of modern missions', who established the Baptist Missionary Society in 1792.

Carey now operates two campuses: the original Harrisdale campus, which has grown to more than 1,500 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, and a Forrestdale campus serving the rapidly-growing south-eastern suburbs. The college has expanded steadily as the Harrisdale, Piara Waters, and Forrestdale catchments have grown.

Academically, Carey punches above its weight. Approximately 50% of Carey's ATAR students rank in the top 20% of ATAR students in Australia annually, and a high percentage of Carey ATAR graduates are offered places in their first preference course. The school maintains both an ATAR pathway for university entry and a vocational (VET) pathway for direct workforce or TAFE entry.

What Carey is known for

Strong recent ATAR results

Around 50% of Carey ATAR students rank in the top 20% nationally, with high first-preference offer rates. For a relatively young Christian college, the academic results are very competitive in the southern corridor.

Two-campus model in fast-growing corridor

Harrisdale + Forrestdale gives Carey reach across the south-east Perth growth corridor. Both campuses serve catchments where families are actively shopping for schools.

ATAR + VET pathway breadth

Carey runs both a strong ATAR pathway and a VET pathway, so students considering trades or direct workforce don't have to leave the school. The flexibility is genuine.

Christian ethos in growing suburbs

Carey is one of the few options for explicitly Christian K-12 schooling in the Harrisdale/Piara Waters corridor. For Christian families in those suburbs, the school is a meaningful local option.

Things to consider

Carey isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

Christian foundation is central

Religious education, chapel-style services, and Christian framing are core. For families of other faiths or none, the explicit Christian identity is worth understanding.

Mid-tier Christian fees

Fees are substantial but below top PSA-tier independents. Camps, uniforms, and co-curricular activities add to the base.

Growth pressure

Both campuses have been growing rapidly to meet catchment demand. Class sizes and facilities have expanded but rapid growth can create growing pains. Worth visiting recently.

Smaller senior school than top independents

Year 11-12 cohorts are smaller than the largest WA independents, which can mean fewer ATAR subjects offered at the top end. Worth checking subject availability for your senior plan.

The ATAR pathway at Carey

Carey students take broad ATAR plates. Most common: Pre-medicine / health (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Engineering (Methods + Physics + Chemistry + English), Commerce (Methods or Apps + Economics + English + a science), and Music + ATAR (Music + Methods + a science + English).

UWA and Curtin are the dominant tertiary destinations, with Murdoch and ECU also common given proximity. VET graduates often pursue TAFE pathways or direct workforce entry.

"Carey Baptist gives strong foundations but Year 12 Methods needed the extra structure Educatta provides. Tutor marked everything to SCSA standard."
