Inside Como Secondary

Como Secondary College is an independent public, specialist, co-educational high school located in Como, just south of the Swan River. It is a Year 7 to 12 college serving the Como, South Perth, and surrounding suburbs catchment, with state-wide entry to its specialist programs.

Como runs four long-running and Department of Education-approved specialist programs: Science and Technology (specifically the EMITS, Enriched Mathematics, Information Technology and Science, program), Hockey, Golf, and Music. Each is run as a structured pathway with entry through specialist auditions or testing in Year 6.

The EMITS program is the academic flagship and takes advantage of Como's close partnerships with Curtin University and the University of Western Australia. Students of above-average ability in maths, science, and technology fields move through an extension and accelerated curriculum, with university outreach experiences (lectures, mentorships, summer programs) that few public schools can offer at this scale.

What Como Secondary is known for

EMITS specialist STEM program

Enriched Mathematics, IT and Science specialist program with formal partnerships with Curtin and UWA. For STEM-leaning students, EMITS is one of the better non-fully-selective public school options in Perth.

Specialist Music program

One of WA's better-resourced public school music programs, with dedicated facilities and external performance opportunities.

Specialist Hockey and Golf

Unusual combination, most schools don't run two specialist sports. Hockey and Golf both have established WA institute pathways that Como feeds into.

Inner-south river-adjacent location

Como's location near the Swan and within easy reach of Curtin and UWA gives the school strong university connections without the long commute.

Things to consider

Como Secondary isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

EMITS entry is competitive

EMITS has limited places and entry is via testing. Most Como students are in the general cohort, not EMITS. Worth understanding which experience applies to your child.

Specialist programs require commitment

Hockey, Golf, and Music specialists involve significant time commitments outside school hours. The programs are not casual.

Public school resourcing

While Como is a strong public school, the resourcing reflects public-school standards. Co-curricular depth outside the specialist programs is more limited than top private schools.

Catchment

Como's demographic is mixed but lean affluent for a public school, which influences the school culture. Visit before assuming.

The ATAR pathway at Como Secondary

Como Secondary students take strong ATAR plates. EMITS students typically: Methods + Specialist + Physics + Chemistry. Other common combinations: Pre-medicine (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Health sciences (Methods or Apps + Chemistry + Human Bio + Psychology), and Humanities / Arts (Literature + History + a Language + Methods).

UWA and Curtin are the dominant tertiary destinations, with EMITS graduates often heading into UWA's higher-tier STEM courses (Engineering, Medical Science, Computer Science).

"Como Secondary is close to Bentley which made Educatta the obvious choice. Two terms in and my Methods went from C to A."
