Inside Harrisdale SHS

Harrisdale Senior High School is an Independent Public School in the City of Armadale, located on Laverton Crescent in Harrisdale, 21 kilometres south of Perth. The school opened at the start of the 2017 school year to serve the rapidly-growing residential corridor of Harrisdale, Piara Waters, and Forrestdale.

Harrisdale is one of WA's newer public secondary schools, built specifically to address the catchment pressure created by the south-east residential growth boom of the 2010s. The school was planned and built with modern teaching philosophies in mind, including dedicated specialist facilities for visual art, media, and dance, plus a lecture theatre and a hockey pitch on site.

Harrisdale is recognised as one of sixteen select schools in Western Australia delivering the Department of Education's Gifted and Talented Selective program. The GATE Selective program offers enriching, challenging opportunities focused on critical thinking, inquiry, and problem solving for academically capable students. Harrisdale also runs a Specialist Languages Program with immersive experiences in French and Japanese.

What Harrisdale SHS is known for

Newer Independent Public School

Opening in 2017 means Harrisdale was built with modern teaching philosophies and facilities from day one, an advantage over older schools where renovation and adaptation are constant.

GATE Selective program

Harrisdale is one of only 16 WA schools delivering the centralised GATE Selective program. For academically gifted students in the southern corridor, Harrisdale is a meaningful public-school option without the long commute to Perth Modern.

Specialist Languages program

Immersive French and Japanese instruction with cultural exchange opportunities. For language-leaning students, this is one of the better WA public-school programs.

Modern specialist facilities

Dedicated visual art, media, and dance facilities, plus a lecture theatre and a hockey pitch. The campus is deliberately resourced for modern senior secondary teaching.

Things to consider

Harrisdale SHS isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

Newer school, smaller alumni network

Opening in 2017 means the alumni community is still growing. The career-network value is less than at long-running schools.

Senior school still maturing

Y11-12 cohorts have only existed for a few years, and the ATAR record is still being established. Programs at the top end may have more limited subject availability than larger schools.

Growth pressure

The catchment is one of WA's fastest-growing. Class sizes and facilities have been expanding to keep up, which can create growing pains.

Specialist program entry is competitive

GATE Selective and Specialist Languages have entry processes. Most students are in the standard cohort; check which experience your child is signing up for.

The ATAR pathway at Harrisdale SHS

Harrisdale ATAR students take standard combinations. Most common: Pre-medicine (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Engineering (Methods + Physics + Chemistry + English), Languages + ATAR (English + Methods + French or Japanese + a science), and Commerce (Methods or Apps + Economics + English + a humanity).

Curtin University, UWA, and Murdoch are the dominant tertiary destinations given proximity and program coverage.

"Harrisdale SHS is newer so the senior cohort is still building. Educatta filled the depth gap, especially for Chemistry."
