Inside Lynwood SHS

Lynwood Senior High School was first established in 1974, initially in eight demountable classrooms on the grounds of Cannington Senior High School. The school then moved to its current Parkwood site, 15 kilometres from the Perth CBD. It serves a south-east Perth catchment across Parkwood, Lynwood, Langford, and surrounding suburbs.

Lynwood was named the WA Secondary School of the Year in 2018, a recognition of the school's progress on academic outcomes, student wellbeing, and program development. The award reflects what the school has been deliberate about over the past decade, building distinctive specialist programs and an Intensive English Centre that serves international and EAL/D students.

The school runs three notable specialist offerings: a specialist sustainability education program (one of the few in WA), a specialist soccer program, and an Approved Specialist program in Environment and Life Sciences (EaLS). The school also includes a comprehensive vocational education and training pathway for senior students, with VET certificates available in Business, Engineering Pathways, Health Services, and Music Industry.

Strong VET pathways

Lynwood's VET options (Business, Engineering, Health Services, Music) make it a genuine option for students considering trades or direct workforce pathways alongside ATAR.

Things to consider

Lynwood SHS isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

Smaller senior cohort

1,179 students total means the Year 11-12 cohort is moderate-sized. Subject offerings at the top end may be more limited than larger schools.

Specialist program entry

Sustainability, soccer, and EaLS specialists have entry processes. Most students are in the standard cohort.

Public school resourcing

Lynwood is well-run but resourcing is public-school standard.

Catchment dynamics

South-east Perth's demographic mix means the school serves a wide socio-economic spread. Visit before assuming.

The ATAR pathway at Lynwood SHS

Lynwood ATAR students take a broad range of pathways. Most common: Pre-medicine / health (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Engineering (Methods + Physics + Chemistry + English), Commerce (Methods or Apps + Economics + English + a science), and Education / arts (Apps + English + Psychology + a humanity).

Curtin University is the dominant tertiary destination given proximity. UWA and ECU also feature, with VET graduates often progressing to TAFE pathways or direct workforce.
