Inside St Norbert
St Norbert College was established in 1965 by the Norbertine Canons, a Catholic religious order that traces its roots to Premontre Abbey in northern France in 1120. In 1964, Archbishop Prendiville invited the Norbertine Canons to establish a boys' school in the rapidly-growing Queens Park area east of the Perth CBD. When the college opened, fewer than thirty students were enrolled in a single Year 6 class.
The college became co-educational in 1976, when girls were initially enrolled in Year 8, bringing the total enrolment to over 340 students. The Norbertine character of the school has remained central even as enrolment has grown to around 890 students across Years 7 to 12 today.
St Norbert is one of only a handful of Norbertine schools in Australia. The Norbertine Order's emphasis on common life, contemplation in action, and service informs the college's pastoral framework, a distinctive flavour among Perth's Catholic schools, which are predominantly run by other orders (Christian Brothers, Mercy Sisters, Loreto, Jesuits).
