Inside St Norbert

St Norbert College was established in 1965 by the Norbertine Canons, a Catholic religious order that traces its roots to Premontre Abbey in northern France in 1120. In 1964, Archbishop Prendiville invited the Norbertine Canons to establish a boys' school in the rapidly-growing Queens Park area east of the Perth CBD. When the college opened, fewer than thirty students were enrolled in a single Year 6 class.

The college became co-educational in 1976, when girls were initially enrolled in Year 8, bringing the total enrolment to over 340 students. The Norbertine character of the school has remained central even as enrolment has grown to around 890 students across Years 7 to 12 today.

St Norbert is one of only a handful of Norbertine schools in Australia. The Norbertine Order's emphasis on common life, contemplation in action, and service informs the college's pastoral framework, a distinctive flavour among Perth's Catholic schools, which are predominantly run by other orders (Christian Brothers, Mercy Sisters, Loreto, Jesuits).

What St Norbert is known for

Norbertine religious tradition

The Norbertine Canons' long European tradition shapes the school's character in ways that distinguish it from other Catholic colleges in Perth. The order's combination of contemplative life and active ministry is reflected in the school's culture.

Co-educational Catholic option in inner-east Perth

One of the closer Catholic co-ed colleges to the city centre on the eastern side. For families in Cannington, Bentley, Carlisle, and surrounding suburbs, St Norbert is the local Catholic option.

Manageable size

At ~890 students across six year levels, St Norbert has a smaller-school feel than larger colleges. That can be a positive for students who'd struggle to feel known in a bigger school.

Solid mid-tier Catholic ATAR record

St Norbert sits in the upper-middle band of Perth Catholic schools by ATAR rate. Its results are competitive in the Catholic-school context, though below the top PSA-tier independents.

Things to consider

St Norbert isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

Catholic foundation is central

Religion is a curriculum subject, masses and prayer are part of the school week, and Norbertine framing is woven through the school's structures. For non-Catholic families, this is worth understanding before enrolment.

Smaller senior school

The Y11-12 cohort is more compact than larger Catholic colleges (Aquinas, John XXIII, Corpus Christi). Some less-common ATAR subjects may not run, depending on year-level demand.

Mid-tier Catholic fees

Fees sit in the middle of the WA Catholic-school range, substantial but lower than the top PSA-tier independents. Sibling discounts and other supports exist.

Y7-12, no junior school

St Norbert starts at Year 7. Families need to plan primary education separately. Common feeders include St Joseph's Pignatelli (Attadale) and other CEWA primary schools.

The ATAR pathway at St Norbert

St Norbert students follow standard Catholic-school pathways. Most common: Pre-medicine / health (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Engineering (Methods + Physics + Chemistry + English), Commerce (Methods + Economics + English + a humanity), and Humanities (Literature + History + Religion and Life + a Language).

Curtin University is the dominant tertiary destination given proximity, with UWA, ECU, and Notre Dame Fremantle also common destinations.
