Inside Willetton SHS

Willetton Senior High School is a public secondary school in Willetton, 12 kilometres south of the Perth CBD. With 2,729 enrolled students as of 31 December 2024, it is one of the largest schools in Western Australia by enrolment. The school serves a substantial catchment across Willetton, Riverton, Parkwood, and surrounding suburbs.

Willetton runs three Department of Education-approved specialist programs that take students from across WA. The first is the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, Willetton is one of 20 WA schools running GATE classes, with entry through the centrally-administered annual GATE test in Year 6. The second is a science-focused Gifted & Talented program managed at school level. The third, and most distinctive, is a long-running Computing specialist program that was the first of its kind in WA when introduced, and has since expanded to include a multimedia stream.

Beyond the specialist programs, Willetton runs a specialist Fine Arts course for Years 8 to 10 with a successful senior school art program. Year 12 cohorts at Willetton perform consistently well in the WACE school rankings, and the school is regularly cited as the top non-selective public school in WA.

What Willetton SHS is known for

Top non-selective public school in WA

Willetton's results consistently approach mid-tier private schools without the fees. Outside the fully selective Perth Modern, Willetton is usually the top public school in the state.

Computing specialist (first in WA)

Willetton's Computing specialist program was the first of its kind in WA and remains one of the few schools offering a structured computing pathway from Year 7 onwards.

GATE and academic extension at scale

GATE, science extension, and a strong general academic culture mean Willetton's senior school has more breadth and depth at the top end than most public schools.

Fine Arts and senior art

The Fine Arts specialist program in Years 8-10 plus a strong senior art pathway makes Willetton an unusual public school option for arts-leaning students.

Things to consider

Willetton SHS isn't the right fit for every student. Here are the genuine tradeoffs to think through, drawn from publicly available information about the school.

Very large school

2,729 students is a lot. The scale gives Willetton its program breadth but means individual students can feel less visible. Strong students tend to thrive; quieter students can struggle to be noticed.

Specialist program entry is competitive

GATE has limited places and is centrally administered. The school-managed specialists have entry processes too. Most students are in the standard cohort.

ATAR pressure at the top end

Willetton's reputation creates internal pressure on top students. The competition can be intense in ways more typical of private schools.

Public school resourcing

Willetton is well-resourced for a public school but doesn't match top PSA private schools in campus or co-curricular depth.

The ATAR pathway at Willetton SHS

Willetton students take ambitious ATAR plates, especially in GATE and the science-focused stream. Most common: Specialist STEM (Methods + Specialist + Physics + Chemistry), Pre-medicine (Methods + Chemistry + Human Bio + English), Computing pathway (Methods + Physics + Computing + English), and Commerce / Law (Methods + Economics + English + a humanity).

UWA and Curtin are the dominant tertiary destinations, with strong cohorts in engineering, medicine, and computer science. Computing specialist graduates often pursue software engineering and computer science at UWA and Curtin.
